A new crew member boarded Silmaril today. He may not have a warm personality but he is very reliable as he never gets tired steering a course, and what’s more you don’t need to feed him. We call him Passepartout after the personal valet to Mr Phileas Fogg in the novel Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne
Passepartout, our new crew member
Passepartout is an ingenious piece of equipment that steers the boat much better than any person would. No short handed crew can make long passages without a self steering device. Ours is a “Sailomat” (http://www.sailomat.com), of Swedish design produced in the USA. Passepartout must have been suspicious to the Dutch customs as he was kept in custody upon arrival in The Netherlands, to be released a few days later. As a consequence we missed our slot to crane Silmaril back in the water. A new attempt will be made this Wednesday 30 April.
