First impressions of Madeira

As we mentioned on our Facebook page (“sailing west with silmaril”), we have arrived in Madeira on October 4th after a 4 days sailing trip from Lagos, Portugal. In fact we were on our way to “The Canaries”, but the winds decided to become very light, too light, for downwind sailing. A look at the weather charts showed that Madeira was a better option, so we turned the bow, and set sail to this beautiful archipelago.

Upon arrival no space was available in the Marina Quinta do Lorde. Madeira does not offer many options to find a berth for your boat. Do Lorde is without any doubts one of the very few safe options. So, we anchored in a beautiful bay a mile east of the marina until space became available. Quite soon, and with some insistence, we could finally slip into our “parking place”. We will be here until Monday the 13th or Tuesday the 14th of October. It will then be time to make a move to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

It was good to catch up with our friends Tommy & Steffi from s/y Yemanja, a couple we first met in Camaret-Sur-Mer. Also the Norwegian s/y “Ariane”, known to us since Oeiras, was here when we arrived. We have already spent plenty of good time together with Tommy & Steffi, exploring the island, discoverimg its magnificent views, unspoiled nature and forests by car and also  through levada hiking  and having diner and good laughs together. For sure, there is plenty more to discover in the next days and more “WOW” moments to come…

We attach some pictures to give you a flavour of our new environment. Ciao 🙂
